We’re so happy you stopped by.
This agency of the United Methodist Church exists to help bring women into full participation in the life and mission of the church by:
(1) naming and confronting institutional sexism;
(2) advocating for women who face gender discrimination;
(3) celebrating and nurturing the gifts, talents and perspectives of women, including how far we have come;
(4) training laity in leadership, bishops, cabinets and pastors to recognize and address sexism and sexual misconduct.
We do this work because we believe that bias and discrimination against women is antithetical to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. And we believe that when we invite women and girls into church members and Christian discipleship, then our denomination is called by our faith to tear down any impediment that would keep women from answering the call of God wherever it might take them.
Here you’ll find the latest news related to women in the United Methodist Church, research about where women are (or are not yet) in church leadership in life, tools for advocacy and education, and links to other groups—within and beyond the church—that are working on behalf of God’s daughters and sons to make gender justice and equality a reality.

GCSRW Prepares for a New Year...

2009-12 Ministry, Mandates and Quadrennial Tasks for the General Commission on the Status and Role of Women
Disciplinary Mandates
- To advocate for full inclusion of women at all levels of the United Methodist Church.
- To help the Church recognize and address institutional sexism and gender-bias.
- To monitor churchwide agencies, annual conferences and related institutions/entities and to report what we see—where women are and are NOT.
Disciplinary mandates (cont’d.)
- To ensure that agencies and entities receiving General Church funds comply with goals for full inclusion of women. Where entities are NOT in compliance, we may recommend that GCFA withhold funding until compliance is achieved in those agencies.
- To help build, support and resource annual conference CSRWs (or equivalent structures), so that they may extend the ministries of advocacy, monitoring and pushing for change.
Assignments from GC Resolutions
- GCSRW is to convene a Sexual Ethics Task force and do training, advocacy and intervention to prevent or justly address sexual harassment and misconduct in the Church.
- GCSRW is to advocate for ministries that impact women’s status and role in Church life (i.e., clergy spouse and family concerns, pay equity among clergy and lay employees, leadership development, expanding theological language and imagery).
Other assignments to GCSRW
- Consult with, advise, or act as onsite advisor to bishops, superintendents, pastors, and victims of gender discrimination and sexual discrimination, harassment or misconduct.
- Review all U.S.-based church-related seminaries as part of the University Senate’s Committee on Theological Review.
- Serve on the denomination’s Committee on Personnel Policies and Practices.

- Attend meetings of the General Secretaries’ Table, the Council of Bishops, the General Council on Finance and Administration, the Connectional Table, the Justice for Women Group of the National Council of Churches.
- Report to General Conference regularly on the status and statistics of lay and clergy women at all levels of church life. »Learn More
